Question
Kindly provide the reference for the following:
1) Hasan Basri (rahimahullah) said: “The test of Adam (‘alayhis salam) was food, and it is your test until Qiyamah.”
2) One day, Hasan Basri (rahimahullah) offered some food to his companion, who said, “I have eaten until I am no longer able to eat,” to which Hasan said: “Subhanallah! Does a Muslim eat until he is no longer able to eat?”
Answer
1) Imam Abu Bakr ibn Abid Dunya (rahimahullah) has recorded this statement.
Imam Hasan Basri (rahimahullah) or another person said: “The test of your father Adam (‘alayhis salam) was a morsel of food, and it remains your test until the Day of Qiyamah.”
(Al Ju’, Hadith: 97. Also see: Tarikh Baghdad, vol. 10, pg. 264)
2) This incident is recorded in Az Zuhd of Imam Ahmad (rahimahullah).
‘Uqbah Ar Rasibi (rahimahullah) said: “I entered upon Hasan Basri and found him eating bread and meat. He said: ‘Come, join me in the food of free men.’ I said, ‘I have already eaten, and I am not able to eat,’ to which he responded, ‘Subhanallah! Does a Muslim eat until he is unable to eat?'”

(٩٧) – حدثني الحسين بن عبد الرحمن، قال: قال الحسن أو غيره: كانت بلية أبيكم آدم عليه السلام أكلة، وهي بليتكم إلى يوم القيامة.

أخبرنا أبو عمر الحسن بن عثمان الواعظ، قال: أخبرنا أحمد بن جعفر بن حمدان، قال: حدثنا العباس بن يوسف الشكلي، قال: سمعت سريا السقطي يقول: إني لأشتهي الحندقوقي منذ ست عشرة سنة، والهندباء بخل منذ ثمان عشرة سنة، وإني لأعجب ممن يتسع كيف يطلق له العلم الاتساع، وهذا عبد الواحد بن زيد يقول: الملح بشبارجات، وإن بلية أبيكم آدم لقمة، وهي أخرجته من الجنة، وهي بليتكم إلى أن تقوم الساعة.
الزهد لأحمد:
(١٥٢٣) – حدثنا عبد الله، حدثنا عبد الله بن عمر، حدثنا المنهال، يعني ابن عيسى، عن عقبة الراسبي قال: دخلت على الحسن فوافيته يتغذى خبرا ولحما فقال: هلم إلى طعام الأحرار فقلت: أكلت لا أستطيع أن آكل فقال: سبحان الله، ويأكل المسلم حتى لا يستطيع أن يأكل.
