Question
I was told of a Hadith which states that whoever wears the clothing of the disbelievers will become the enemies of Allah.
ولا تلبسوا ملابس أعدائي، ولا تركبوا مراكب أعدائي؛ فتكونوا أعدائي كما هم أعدائي
Answer
Imam Abu Nu’aym (rahimahullah) and Imam ‘Abdul Ghani al Maqdisi (rahimahullah) have recorded this as the statement of the pious Tabi’i, Malik ibn Dinar (rahimahullah), and not as a Hadith of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam).
Malik ibn Dinar (rahimahullah) said: “Allah revealed to one of the Ambiya: ‘Tell your people not to frequent the gatherings of My enemies, not to consume the food of My enemies, not to wear the clothing of My enemies, and not to ride what My enemies ride, lest you become My enemies just as they are My enemies.’”
(Hilyatul Awliya, vol. 2, pg. 371 and Al Amr bil Ma’ruf: 87)
The above may be quoted as the statement of Malik ibn Dinar (rahimahullah).
Furthermore, Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Umar (radiyallahu anhuma) reports that Nabi (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:
“Whoever imitates a people is from among them.”
