Question
Is this Hadith authentic?
Sa’id ibn Jubayr (radiyallahu ‘anhu) says:
“By keeping the miswak on the ground if a person becomes mad [majnun], he should blame none other than himself.”
Is this why they say that it is recommended to keep the miswak standing instead of keeping it horizontal?
Answer
This is not a Hadith of Rasulullah (sallallahu ’alayhi wa sallam).
In the quote you have provided, it is cited as the statement of the famous Tabi’i; Sa’id ibn Jubayr (rahimahullah).
This appears in several fiqh books like the following:
Halabatul Mujalli, vol. 1, section on the miswak,
Raddul Muhtar, vol. 1, pg. 115
Al-I’lam, bi fawaidi ‘Umdatil Ahkam, vol. 1, pg. 564
These sources cite Imam Hakeem Tirmidhi (rahimahullah) to have quoted this, without any mention of a chain.
However, after citing this, [among other etiquettes of the miswak] Hafiz Ibnul Mulaqqin (rahimahullah)- a renowned Hadith master and Faqih- states:
“These are good etiquettes that one should adopt, as they are a source of good.”

(قوله: وإلا فخطر الجنون) فإنه يروى عن سعيد بن جبير قال: من وضع سواكه بالأرض فجن من ذلك فلا يلومن إلا نفسه، حلية عن الحكيم الترمذي.

ونقل بعض المالكية عن الغزالي أنه نص على أن ما ينفصل بالسواك من الطعام المتغير المتعلق بالأسنان محرم أكله، وهو غريب. قال -أعني الترمذي [الحكيم]: ولا يمس بالسواك شيئًا فإن ذلك يورث العمى. قال: ولا تضع السواك إذا وضعته عرضًا وانصبه نصبًا، فإنه يروى عن سعيد بن جبير قال: «من وضع سواكه بالأرض فجن [من ذلك] فلا يلومنَّ إلَّا نفسه». وهذه آداب حسنة ينبغي استعمالها فإنه لا تجلب إلَّا خيرًا.
