Question
Is this Hadith authentic?
Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:
“Fasting on the day of ‘Ashura is equivalent [i.e., carries the reward] of fasting for one year”
Answer
Imam Ibn Hibban (rahimahullah) has recorded this Hadith on the authority of Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (radiyallahu ‘anhu). He has declared the Hadith authentic.

(٣٦٣١) – أخبرنا الحسن بن سفيان، حدثنا محمد بن المنهال الضرير، حدثنا يزيد بن زريع، حدثنا سعيد، حدثنا قتادة، عن غيلان بن جرير، عن عبد الله بن معبد، عن أبي قتادة، أن رجلا سأل النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، فقال: يا رسول الله، أرأيت رجلا يصوم يوم عاشوراء؟، قال:«ذاك صوم سنة»، قال: أرأيت رجلا يصوم يوم عرفة، قال: «يكفر السنة، وما قبلها».
