Question
I am looking for the reference of the incident wherein Sayyiduna ‘Umar was once patrolling with Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (radiyallahu ‘anhu) when he peeped into an old man’s house and found him drinking alcohol. The old man told Sayyiduna ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhu) that he had committed one sin but Sayyiduna ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhu) also committed sins due to this. The incident then mentions that the old man repented and Sayyiduna ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhu) refraining from disclosing the incident, even to Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (radiyallahu ‘anhu).

There are several versions of this incident. The version you have queried regarding is recorded in At Tawbikh wat Tambih of Abush Shaykh Al Asbahani and Kitabut Targhib wat Tarhib of Abul Qasim al Asbahani.
The incident is as follows:
Once, ‘Umar ibnul Khattab (radiyallahu ‘anhu) went out [on patrol] and saw the glow of a fire. He was accompanied by ‘Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (radiyallahu ‘anhu). He followed the light until he entered the property, where he saw a lamp glowing in one of the rooms. ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhu) entered, -and this was in the middle of the night-. He found an elderly man sitting, with intoxicants in front of him and a female singer singing to him. The elderly man did not notice ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhu) until ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhu) surprised him [by appearing in front of him].
‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhu) said: “I have never seen a sight worse than this tonight; an elderly man awaiting his death in such a state!” The elderly man raised his head and said: “No, O Amirul Mu-minin, what you have done is worse. You have spied on me, and spying has been prohibited, and you entered without permission.”
‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhu) said: “You have spoken the truth.” He then left, biting his hand and crying, saying: “May Umar’s mother be bereaved of him if his Rabb does not forgive him!”
The elderly man thereafter avoided Umar’s (radiyallahu ‘anhu) gatherings for a period of time. After a while, ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhu) was once seated in a gathering, when he saw the elderly man entering. He was trying to remain unnoticed. sitting at the back of the crowd. ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhu) saw him and said: “Bring that elderly man to me.”
The man initially refused but eventually came forward thinking that ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhu) was about to reprimand him for what had happened. ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhu) brought him closer until he seated him beside himself and asked him to bring his ear even closer, so much so that he almost made a morsel out of his ear [i.e. That is how close he asked him to come] then [whispered] in his ear: “By the One who sent Muhammad (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) with the truth as a Messenger, I have not informed anyone of what I saw [that night], not even Ibn Mas’ud, who was with me.”
The man then went so close to ‘Umar’s (radiyallahu ‘anhu) ear that he almost made a morsel out of it and said: “By the One who sent Muhammad (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) with the truth as a Messenger, I have not returned to that act.”
At this, Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhu) raised his voice, proclaiming “Allahu Akbar (Allah is the Greatest)!” The people did not know why he was saying it.

(١٠٨) – حدثنا أحمد بن خالد الرازي، ثنا محمد بن حميد، ثنا نعيم بن ميسرة النحوي، عن السدي، قال: خرج عمر بن الخطاب رضي الله عنه، فإذا هو بضوء نار، ومعه عبد الله بن مسعود، قال: فاتبع الضوء حتى دخل دارا، فإذا سراج في بيت، فدخل، وذلك في جوف الليل، فإذا شيخ جالس وبين يديه شراب وقينة تغنيه، فلم يشعر حتى هجم عليه، فقال عمر: ما رأيت كالليلة منكرا أقبح من شيخ ينتظر أجله ، فرفع الشيخ رأسه إليه، فقال: بلى، يا أمير المؤمنين، ما صنعت أنت أقبح، إنك قد تجسست، وقد نهي عن التجسس، ودخلت بغير إذن، فقال عمر: صدقت، ثم خرج عاضا على يديه يبكي ، قال: ثكلت عمر أمه إن لم يغفر له ربه، يجد هذا، كان يستخفي هذا من أهله ، فيقول: الآن رأى عمر فيتتابع فيه، قال: وهجر الشيخ مجالس عمر حينا، فبينما عمر بعد ذلك بعيد جالس، إذا هو به قد جاء شبه المستخفي، حتى جلس في أخريات الناس، فرآه عمر، فقال: علي بهذا الشيخ، فقيل له: أجب. فقام وهو يرى أن عمر سينبئه بما رأى، فقال له عمر: ادن مني، فما زال يدنيه حتى أجلسه بجانبه، فقال: أدن مني أذنك، فالتقم أذنه، فقال: أما والذي بعث محمدا بالحق رسولا، ما أخبرت أحدا من الناس بما رأيت منكرا، ولا ابن مسعود، فإنه كان معي، فقال: يا أمير المؤمنين، أدن مني أذنك، فالتقم أذنه، فقال: ولا أنا والذي بعث محمدا بالحق رسولا، ما عدت إليه حتى جلست مجلسي، فرفع عمر صوته فكبر، ما يدري الناس من أي شيء يكبر.
