Question
What is the reference for the du’a to recite on a hot day:
لا إله إلا الله ما أشد حر هذا اليوم

This du’a is part of a longer Hadith recorded in ‘Amalul Yawmi wal Laylah of Imam Ibnus Sunni and other sources.
Sayyiduna Abu Sa’id al Khudri (radiyallahu ‘anhu) or Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reported that Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “When a person recites the following du’a on a hot day, Allah ‘Azza wa Jalla says to Jahannam, “One of My servants has sought refuge in me from your heat, you bear witness that I have protected him:
لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا الله، مَا أَشَدَّ حَرَّ هٰذَا الْيَوْمِ، اللّٰهُمَّ أَجِرْنِي مِنْ حَرِّ جَهَنَّم
Transliteration: La ilaha illallah ma ashadda harra hadhal yawm. Allahumma ajirni min harri Jahannam
Translation: There is no deity but Allah. How intense is the heat today! O Allah, protect me from the heat of Jahannam.

(٣٠٦) – حدثني جعفر بن عيسى الحلواني، ثنا إبراهيم بن هانئ، ثنا أبو صالح، ثنا يحيى بن أيوب، عن عبد الله بن سليمان، حدثني دراج، حدثني أبو الهيثم واسمه سليمان بن عمرو بن عبدة العتواري عن أبي سعيد الخدري، رضي الله عنه، أو عن ابن حجيرة الأكبر، عن أبي هريرة، رضي الله عنه – أو أحدهما – حدثه عن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال: «إذا كان يوم حار، فقال الرجل: لا إله إلا الله، ما أشد حر هذا اليوم، اللهم أجرني من حر جهنم، قال الله عز وجل لجهنم: إن عبدا من عبادي استجار بي من حرك فاشهدي أني أجرته، وإن كان يوم شديد البرد، فإذا قال العبد: لا إله إلا الله، ما أشد برد هذا اليوم، اللهم أجرني من زمهرير جهنم، قال الله عز وجل لجهنم: إن عبدا من عبادي قد استجارني من زمهريرك، وإني أشهدك أني قد أجرته» . قالوا: ما زمهرير جهنم؟ قال: «بيت يلقى فيه الكافر، فيتميز من شدة بردها بعضه من بعض».
