Is this Hadith authentic?
Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said, “The Banu Israil used to be ruled and guided by prophets: Whenever a prophet died, another would take over his place. There will be no prophet after me, but there will be Caliphs who will increase in number.” The people asked, “O Allah’s Messenger (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam)! What do you order us (to do)?” He said, “Obey the one who will be given the pledge of allegiance first. Fulfil their (i.e. the Caliphs) rights, for Allah will ask them about (any shortcoming) in ruling those Allah has put under their guardianship.”
Answer
Imams Bukhari and Muslim (rahimahumallah) have recorded this narration. The Hadith is therefore authentic.
Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reported that Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “The affairs of the Banu Israil were managed by the Ambiya. Whenever a Nabi passed away, another would succeed him. However, there is no Nabi after me. Rather, there will be numerous caliphs.” The Sahabah (radiyallahu ‘anhum) asked, “What do you command us to do?” He replied, “Fulfil your allegiance to each leader in succession, granting them their due rights. For indeed, Allah will hold them accountable for what He has entrusted to them.”

صحيح مسلم:
