Question
Kindly provide the reference for this:
“Two things, if safeguarded, will ensure one’s fast remains intact: backbiting and lying.”
Answer
Imam Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah and Imam Bayhaqi (rahimahumallah) have recorded this as the statement of the Tabi’i, Imam Mujahid ibn Jabr (rahimahullah).
Mujahid ibn Jabr (rahimahullah) said: “Whoever safeguards two things, will ensure that his fast is protected; Backbiting and speaking lies.”
(Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah: 8980, Shu’abul Iman: 3378 and Fadailul Awqat: 65)
Imam Bayhaqi (rahimahullah) further adds: “Just as one refrains from inappropriate acts while fasting, he should likewise exert himself in obedience to Allah in Ramadan to the best of his ability.”
