Where can I find this narration?
Ibn ‘Abbas (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) said: “There are three types of people I cannot properly repay: A man who greets me first with peace, a man who makes room for me in a gathering, and a man who gets his feet dusty walking to me just to greet me with peace. But there’s a fourth type – only Allah Almighty can reward him on my behalf.”
Someone asked: “Who is that?” He replied: “A man who faces some difficulty and spends his night thinking about who he should turn to for help, then decides I’m suitable for his need and brings his problem to me.”
Answer
This statement of Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) is recorded in Al Mujalasah wa Jawahirul ‘ilm.
Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) said: “There are three types of people whose kindness I cannot fully repay; The one who greets me with salam first, the one who makes room for me in a gathering and a man who gets his feet dusty while walking to me just to make make salam with me. And there is a fourth type who only Allah can reward and reciprocate on my behalf.” When asked who is this person, he responded, “A man who faces some [difficulty] and spends the night reflecting over whom he should turn to for help, then decides that I am suitable to address his need and brings his problem to me.”

Imam Bayhaqi (rahimahullah) has recorded this narration with variation in the wording in Shu’abul Iman.

(٦٨١)- حدثنا أحمد، نا إسماعيل بن إسحاق، نا علي بن عبد الله، عن سفيان بن عيينة؛ قال: قال ابن عباس رضي الله عنه: ثلاثة لا أكافئهم: رجل بدأني بالسلام، ورجل أوسع لي في المجلس، ورجل اغبرت قدماء في المشي إلي إرادة التسليم علي، فأما الرابع: فلا يكافئه عني إلا الله عز وجل. قيل: ومن هو؟ قال: رجل نزل به أمر فبات ليلته يفكر بمن ينزله، ثم رآني أهلا لحاجته؛ فأنزلها بي.

(١٠٣٨٢) – أخبرنا أبو عبد الله الحافظ، أخبرنا محمد بن موسى الفقيه، حدثنا إبراهيم ابن أبي طالب، حدثنا محمود بن خداش، حدثنا أبو داود الحفري، عن سفيان الثوري، عن عبد الله بن دينار،- عن ابن عباس قال: ثلاثة لا أكافئهم رجل وسع لي في المجلس لا أقدر أن أكافئه ولو خرجت من جميع ما أملك، والثاني من اغبرت قدماه بالاختلاف إلي، فإني لا أقدر أن أكافئه ولو قطرت له من دمي، والثالث لا أقدر أن أكافئه حتى يكافئه رب العالمين عني من أنزل بي الحاجة لم يجد لها موضعا غيري».

وعن ابن عباس كان يقول: ثلاثة لا أكافئهم: رجل ضاق مجلسي فأوسع لي، ورجل كنت ظمآن فسقاني، ورجل اغبرّت قدماه في الاختلاف على بابي، ورابع لا أقدر على مكافأته، ولا يكافئه عني إلا الله عز وجل: رجل حزبه أمر فبات ليلته ساهرا. فلما أصبح لم يجد لحاجته معتمدا غيري.

وقال [ابن عباس] رضي الله عنه: أربعة لا أقدر على مكافأتهم: رجل بدأني بالسلام، ورجل وسع لي في المجلس، ورجل اغبرت قدماه في المشي في حاجتي، فأما الرابع فما يكافئه عني إلا الله عز وجل، قيل: ومن هو قال: رجل نزل به أمر فبات ليلته يفكر فيمن يقصده ثم رآني أهلاً لحاجته فأنزلها بي.
