Question
What is the reference for this du’a to be recited before wudu?
“Bismillahil ‘Azimi Wal-hamdu Lil-lahi Ala Dinil Islam”
Answer
This du’a has been suggested in some Fiqh books. Some have also mentioned that this du’a appears in the Hadith.
However, I have not come across these words in the Hadith collections I have referred to. ‘Allamah ‘Ayni (rahimahullah) has also indicated that he has not come across this in a Hadith.
(Al Binayah, vol. 1, pg. 194)
Imam Tabarani (rahimahullah) has recorded a Hadith wherein Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) advised Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) to recite “Bismillahi wal Hamdulillah” before wudu.
