Question
Please provide the reference for this du’a to be recited when experiencing drought:
O Allah! Grant us rain which will replenish us, torrential, fertilizing and profitable, not injurious, granting it now without delay.
Answer
Imam Abu Dawud (rahimahullah) and others have recorded this narration on the authority Sayyiduna Jabir ibn Abdillah (radiyallahu ‘anhuma). Some people had complained to Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) regarding a drought they were experiencing. Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) instructed them to recite the following du’a:
اللّٰهُمَّ اسْقِنَا غَيْثًا مُغِيثًا، مَرِيئًا مَرِيعًا، نَافِعًا غَيْرَ ضَارٍّ، عَاجِلًا غَيْرَ آجِلٍ
(Sunan Abi Dawud, Hadith: 1162. Declared authentic by Imam Ibn Khuzaymah and Imam Hakim. Hafiz Dhahabi concurs. Sahih Ibn khuzaymah, Hadith: 1416, Mustadrak Hakim, vol. 1, pg. 327)
Transliteration
Allahumas qina ghaythan mughitha, mari an mari’a, nafi’an ghayra darrin, ‘ajilan ghayra ajil
And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
