Question
Is the following Hadith authentic?
Narrated in Sahih Bukhari:
The angels will call to the Believers and they will come in front of their Rabb and Allah will say: “My servants, come closer to Me.” There are special servants to whom Allah will say: “Come closer to Me.” This servant keeps coming closer and closer until the light (veil) finally covers him, such that no angel can hear nor see, all that is said or heard is only between the servant and Allah. Allah says: “Oh My servant, look at your records.” and he sees sins. Allah then says to him: “Didn’t you know that you did this sin and I could see you! And didn’t you know this day will come? Didn’t you know that today I will question you?” And he will say: “My Rabb, I did.” And Allah will say to him: “Why did you do it?” The servant will say: “Oh My Rabb! For here throwing me into the Hellfire is easier than to judge me, and me standing before you with this sin.”
So then he looks at the next page, he sees another sin, worse than the previous one, same thing happens again and again. Then he looks at the worst sins, and sins keep growing and this poor Believer is sitting there saying: “My Rabb.” In the end, he says: “I’m actually going to Jahannam, my deeds haven’t been accepted! I’ve done all these wrong deeds, and that’s why my good deeds have been invalid.” So when he is certain that he’s going to end up in Hellfire, Allah will say to him: “My servant, you know how you kept it a secret in the former life.” He says “Yes.” And Allah will say: “Why did you keep it a secret?”
He says: “Because I was ashamed of my sin, my Rabb.” Allah says: “Can’t you see I kept it a secret in the former life? I didn’t expose you, and that was part of my mercy, and today I will keep it a secret, I will not expose it.” He goes back to his book of deeds and turns the page, he sees his first good deed, then he turns and sees a better deed, and his deeds keep growing. Then he turns back, and the records are empty of his sins. The angels don’t know it’s wiped off. And the sins will be forgotten.
Answer
I have not come across this version in Sahih Bukhari. The following version may be quoted instead:
Sayyiduna Safwan ibn Muhriz Al-Mazini (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reported, “Once I was walking with Ibn ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) holding his hand, when a man came in front of us and asked, ‘What have you heard from Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) regarding the secret conversation [between Allah and his slave]?” Ibn ‘Umar (radiyallahu ‘anhuma) replied, ‘I heard Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) saying, ‘Allah will bring a believer close and [shelter him] and ask him, ‘Do you recognise such and such sin? Do you confess to such and such sin? He will say, ‘Yes, my Rabb. Allah will keep on asking him till he will confess [all] his sins and will think that he is ruined. Allah will then say: ‘I concealed your sins in the world and today, I will forgive you.’ He then will be given his book of good deeds. As for the disbelievers and hypocrites [their evil acts will be exposed] and the witnesses will say, ‘Those are the ones who lied against their Rabb.’ Yes indeed! Allah’s curse is on the wrongdoers.’” (Surah Hud, Verse: 11)
