Question
What is the status of the following narration?
من عض على شبدعه، سلم من الآثام
Answer
This statement has been cited as a Hadith in some works on Gharibul Hadith and in other secondary sources. However, I have not come across an authentic chain of transmission for it.
In an Nihayah fi Gharibil Hadith, this has been cited as an idiom/expression. ‘Allamah Muhammad Tahir Al Fatani has likewise cited it as an idiom.
(An Nihayah fi Gharibil Hadith, vol. 1, pg. 39 and 839, Majma’u Biharil Anwar, vol. 3, pg. 173. Also see: Majma’ul Amthal, vol. 2, pg. 315)
Translation:
Whoever bites [i.e. restrains] his tongue, will be safe from sins.
See here, here and here for Hadiths regarding protecting the tongue.
And Allah Ta’ala Knows best.
