Question
What is the status of the following Hadith?
Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:
“A generous person will smell the fragrance of Jannah from a distance of 1000 years away and the generous person receives the reward of a Nabi each day. The Mercy of Allah never terminates upon such a person.”
Answer
‘Allamah Suyuti (rahimahullah) has cited this narration in his book on fabricated Hadiths.
(Dhaylul La-Alil Masnu’ah, vol. 2, pg. 765, Hadith: 961, Tanzihush Shari’ah, vol. 2, pg. 144)
This narration is therefore not suitable to quote, despite the fact that generosity is indeed a laudable quality.

قال الديلمي: أسانيد كتاب العروس واهية لا يعتمد عليها، والأحاديث منكرة جدا، وكنت عزمت على إسقاطها.
…وبه إلى جعفر إلى «العروس»…: حدثنا أبو العلاء سوار عن مقاتل بن سليمان عن عطاء عن ابن عباس رفعه: «يشمُّ السخيُّ ريح الجنّة مِن مسيرة ألف عام، ولِلسخيّ عند الله كلَّ يومٍ ثواب نبيٍّ، ورحمةُ الله لا تنقطع عنه طرفة عين».
تنزيه الشريعة: (٢/ ١٤٤)
«يشم السخي ريح الجنة من مسير ألف عام وللسخي عند الله كل يوم ثواب نبي ورحمة الله لا تنقطع عنه، طرفة عين» (مي) من حديث ابن عباس من طريق جعفر الحسيني صاحب كتاب العروس.
