Question
Is this narration authentic?
A pious worshipper said to his son, “O son don’t be like those who hope for Jannah but don’t carry out any [good] deeds and delay repentance hoping to live long.”
Answer
Imam Abu Bakr ibn Abid Dunya (rahimahullah) has recorded this narration as the statement of Wahb ibn Munabbih (rahimahullah), a Tabi’i .

The narration is suitable to quote as reported.

(٢٣) – حدثنا ابن إدريس، عن أبيه، عن وهب بن منبه، قال: قال رجل من العباد لابنه: «يا بني، لا تكن ممن يرجو الآخرة بغير عمل، ويؤخر التوبة بطول الأمل».
شعب الإيمان:
(٦٨٠١) – أخبرنا أبو سعيد، أنا أبو عبد الله، أنا أبو بكر بن أبي الدنيا، نا إدريس، عن أبيه، عن وهب بن منبه قال: «قال رجل من العباد لابنه: يا بني لا تكن ممن يرجو الآخرة بغير عمل، ويؤخر التوبة بطول الأمل».
