Kindly provide a reference for this statement:
Ibn Taymiyyah (rahimahullah) said: “High stations are not reached except through hardship.”
Answer
‘Allamah Ibn Taymiyyah (rahimahullah) has written this in his book, Majmu’ul Fatawa.
He states: “High ranks are not attained except through trials.”
(Majmu’ul Fatawa, vol. 25, pg. 302)
He substantiates his statement by citing the following Hadith: “Sayyiduna Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqas (radiyallahu ‘anhu) once asked Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam), “Which people are tested most severely? Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) replied, “The Ambiya, then the next best, then the next best” [i.e., The honourable noble ones who are the closest to Allah Ta’ala]. A person is tested in accordance to [the strength/weakness] of his Din [Iman]. If he is firm on his Din, his trials will be more severe. If he is weak in his Din, then he is tried according to his strength of his Din. Man will continue being tested until he is left walking upon the earth free of sins.”

والمنازل العالية لا تنال إلا بالبلاء كما قال النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم لما سئل: أي الناس أشد بلاء فقال: «الأنبياء ثم الصالحون ثم الأمثل فالأمثل. يبتلى الرجل على حسب دينه فإن كان في دينه صلابة زيد في بلائه وإن كان في دينه رقة خفف عنه ولا يزال البلاء بالمؤمن حتى يمشي على الأرض وليس عليه خطيئة» رواه الترمذي وغيره.
سنن الترمذي:
(٢٣٩٨) – حدثنا قتيبة، قال: حدثنا حماد بن زيد، عن عاصم ابن بهدلة، عن مصعب بن سعد، عن أبيه، قال: قلت: يا رسول الله، أي الناس أشد بلاء؟ قال: «الأنبياء ثم الأمثل فالأمثل، فيبتلى الرجل على حسب دينه، فإن كان دينه صلبا اشتد بلاؤه، وإن كان في دينه رقة ابتلي على حسب دينه، فما يبرح البلاء بالعبد حتى يتركه يمشي على الأرض ما عليه خطيئة».
هذا حديث حسن صحيح.
وفي الباب عن أبي هريرة، وأخت حذيفة بن اليمان أن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، سئل أي الناس أشد بلاء؟ قال: الأنبياء، ثم الأمثل فالأمثل.
