I am looking for a reference for this incident:
A man criticised Imam Sha’bi (rahimahullah) severely so he said:
إن كنت صادقا؛ فغفر الله لي، وإن كنت كاذبا؛ فغفر الله لك
Answer
Imam Abu Bakr ibn Abid Dunya has recorded this incident. The narration is suitable to quote.
A man once approached Imam Sha’bi (rahimahullah) [a Tabi’i] and hurled insults at him in the presence of a crowd. In response, Sha’bi (rahimahullah) stated, “If your words hold truth, may Allah forgive me, and if they are false, may Allah forgive you.”

(٢٦٣) – وحدثني أبو صالح، قال: سمعت أبا وهب، قال: جاء رجل إلى الشعبي فشتمه في ملأ من الناس، فقال الشعبي: إن كنت صادقا فغفر الله لي، وإن كنت كاذبا فغفر الله لك.
المجالسة وجواهر العلم:
(٨٠٠) – حدثنا محمد بن يونس، نا الأصمعي؛ قال: أسمع رجل الشعبي كلاما، فقال له الشعبي: إن كنت صادقا؛ فغفر الله لي، وإن كنت كاذبا؛ فغفر الله لك. ثم أنشأ يقول:
هنيئا مريئا غير داء مخامر … لعزة من أعراضنا ما استحلت
