Question
What is the authenticity of the narration regarding looking at those who have less wealth than you when seeing a wealthy person?
Answer
Imam Bukhari and Imam Muslim (rahimahumallah) have recorded this Hadith. The Hadith is therefore authentic.
Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (radiyallahu ‘anhu) reports that Nabi (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said:
“When one of you looks at someone who is better than him in wealth and physique, then he should look at one who is less well off than him”
(Sahih Bukhari, Hadith: 6490, Sahih Muslim, Hadith: 2963)

صحيح مسلم:
(٢٩٦٣) – حدثنا يحيى بن يحيى، وقتيبة بن سعيد – قال قتيبة: حدثنا، وقال يحيى: أخبرنا – المغيرة بن عبد الرحمن الحزامي، عن أبي الزناد، عن الأعرج، عن أبي هريرة، أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، قال: «إذا نظر أحدكم إلى من فضل عليه في المال والخلق، فلينظر إلى من هو أسفل منه ممن فضل عليه».
