Question
What is the reference for this du’a in Tawaf?
اللهم قني شح نفسي
Answer
Imam Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah (rahimahullah) has recorded this as the du’a recited by Sayyiduna ‘Abdur Rahman ibn ‘Awf (radiyallahu ‘anhu) while performing Tawaf.
Abu Hayyaj Al Asadi relates: “I once heard an elderly person making Tawaf while reciting the following du’a:
اللّٰهُمَّ قِنِي شُحَّ نَفْسِي
Transliteration: Allahumma qini shuhha nafsi
Translation: O Allah, protect me against the miserliness and greed of my soul
Unaware of his identity, I followed him after he had left and enquired about him. I was then informed that he was ‘Abdur Rahman ibn ‘Awf (radiyallahu ‘anhu).
