The Lower Garment of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) (Lungi)

Question

Is the wearing of the lungi Sunnah?

Or is it an indian/eastern tradition?

Is there anything in the Hadith that indicates towards the Izar being similar to the Lungi?

Answer

The word that is used to refer to the lower garment of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) is: ‘Al-Izar’ (الإزار) which translates as a ‘loin-cloth’ or a ‘wrap’.

This is exactly what the lungi is. The only difference is that some people sow the ends of the lungi (lower wrap) and others don’t, like was the norm in the Prophetic era.

The Arabic word for trouser/pants is: “As-Sarawil” (السراويل)
