Question
Is this Hadith authentic?
Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “By Him in whose [control] lies my life, the world will not terminate until a time comes upon people when neither the murderer will know why he killed, nor the murdered know why he was killed.” The Prophet was asked, “How will this occur?” He replied, There will be wars/turmoil. The murderer and the murdered will both go to Jahannam”
Answer
Imam Muslim (rahimahullah) has recorded this Hadith. The Hadith is therefore authentic.

Disclaimer: In principle, the signs of Qiyamah are ambiguous and nuanced and only Allah Ta’ala Knows their precise timing and exact application. One should certainly take heed from such Hadiths and signs, despite their application to specific events being open to interpretation.

صحيح مسلم:
(٢٩٠٨) – وحدثنا عبد الله بن عمر بن أبان، وواصل بن عبد الأعلى، قالا: حدثنا محمد بن فضيل، عن أبي إسماعيل الأسلمي، عن أبي حازم، عن أبي هريرة، قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: «والذي نفسي بيده لا تذهب الدنيا، حتى يأتي على الناس يوم لا يدري القاتل فيم قتل، ولا المقتول فيم قتل» فقيل: كيف يكون ذلك؟ قال: «الهرج، القاتل والمقتول في النار».
وفي رواية ابن أبان قال: هو يزيد بن كيسان، عن أبي إسماعيل، لم يذكر الأسلمي.
